Haiti Charitable Contributions Approved for 2009 Returns

If you recently made a charitable contribution (or are planning a future donation) to help victims of the Haiti earthquake, your generosity has been rewarded.

On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the House of Representatives unanimously passed H.R. 4462, legislation allowing individuals who make charitable contributions to victims of the earthquake in Haiti to claim an itemized charitable deduction on their 2009 tax return.

That means you won't need to wait until next year to claim your deduction(s) on your 2010 tax return. The legislation also includes a provision allowing those who text messaged a donation to use a phone bill as proof of donation.

In January 2005, Congress enacted this type of relief for individuals who made charitable contributions to victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami that occurred in late December 2004.
